I'm submitting this blog to Technorati in an effort to spread the word. This is something I should probably have done a few months ago.
But it's okay, we're just getting started with this social media revolution, aren't we? It's a tricky deal, but never in the history of the world have human beings been so interconnected and so reachable. The opportunities seem almost boundless and businesses are finally taking this seriously.
If you don't have a blog yet, or if you're not using sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, you may be on the path to irrelevancy. Whether you're looking for a job, want to excel in your current job, or want to attract new customers to your small business, you need a social media strategy!
But don't just dive in willy-nilly, take some time to learn the lay of the land, especially since one of the trickiest aspects of social media and Web 2.0 is mapping out what's tools are available and what you can get out of them. You also want to make sure that you don't confuse personal use with professional use.
So, I went to Barnes and Noble yesterday to look at books on this subject. I saw lots of books on Twitter and some on Facebook, but the social media landscape is way broader than those two services (although they are among the most important to consider).
In the end I bought The Social Media Bible by Lon Safko and David K. Brake. Its a text-book like volume covering everything from MySpace to live casting to Second Life. Looks like its all in there.
It's a good place to start. Good luck on your journey!
